Missing People Welcomes New Chief Executive

Picture of Martin Houghton-BrownThe charity Missing People is delighted to announce (08.06.09) the appointment of Martin Houghton-Brown, currently Deputy Director of Business Development at The Children’s Society, as its new Chief Executive.

Martin is one of the country’s leading authorities on the issue of runaway children, having produced the ground-breaking report 'Stepping Up' which led to HM Government’s Young Runaways Action Plan and the foundation of the Cross- Government Working Group for young runaways.

Martin said: "Becoming chief executive at Missing People represents the most exciting opportunity for me yet. I have spent my working life in the voluntary sector seeking to bring about change and deliver services that can make life better for those who face real pain and difficulty.

“Leading a national charity with such an important role to play in public life is a huge responsibility, but one that I am looking forward to and am committed to delivering. I am convinced that, as we work with our partners in government and other charities, the incredible team at Missing People will deliver growth both in terms of influence and our all important services that meet the needs of some of Britain's most vulnerable people and their families."

Most recently Martin has combined his practice and policy expertise in authoring The Children’s Society’s Business Development Strategy, providing clarity and focus for delivery of services with local authorities and other public sector stakeholders.

Helen Southworth MP, Chair of the All Party Parliamentary Group for Children who run away or go missing, said: “I am delighted that Martin Houghton-Brown has been appointed to lead Missing People in its very important work.  Martin has already achieved significant successes in his work to help runaway children.

“His appointment is excellent news for the thousands of vulnerable people, adults and children, who go missing every year, and for their families who are desperate for their safe return”.

Recent funding success for Missing People has included the largest ever corporate donation, via players of The People's Postcode Lottery, and securing statutory grants from the Department for Children, Schools and Families.

Martin will take over from Paul Tuohy, who became Missing People's first Chief Executive in 2005.
