London Run Remembers Missing Loved Ones
Saturday, 13 March saw a brand-new running event bring together families of the missing in London in aid of the charity Missing People. Runners included mothers of missing children including Kate McCann.
The 6.2 mile (10K) run in Hyde Park, sponsored by Friends Reunited, bought together more than 400 supporters – including Nicki Durbin, mother of missing Luke Durbin, Rachel Elias, sister of former Manic Street Preachers guitarist Richey Edwards and celebrities Zoe Tyler and Kirsten O’Brien.
Kate McCann, whose daughter Madeleine went missing at a Portuguese resort in May 2007, said: “I’m running the ‘Miles for Missing People’ for all missing children. There are thousands of families across the UK waiting for news. That’s why Missing People provides support for missing children, vulnerable adults and families left behind, and we want to do all we can to help them.”
Donations for ‘Miles for Missing People’ can still be made at www.missingpeople.org.uk and for Kate McCann’s fundraising effort at uk.virginmoneygiving.com/katemccann1.
The event, timed as a warm-up run for anyone planning to take part in the Virgin London Marathon on April 25th 2010, kicks off a new partnership between Friends Reunited, the original social networking site, and the charity Missing People. Out-of-home-advertiser Admedia is the event’s media partner.
Martin Houghton-Brown, the CEO of Missing People, said, “We’re so grateful for the support of Friends Reunited at this very special event. The money raised - £20,000 already - will help Missing People to be there for families of the missing every hour of every day.”
Missing People provides support for missing children, vulnerable adults and families left in limbo. Last year the charity received more than 123,000 calls for help.
