Recently deceased individuals, badly decomposed remains or skeletal body parts may all be difficult to identify.

What to do next - Checklist

• Ensure a check of the National Policing Improvement Agency (NPIA) database is made as soon as possible and that they are fully notified of all information within 48 hours of the body/human remains being found.
• Immediately supply the Identification team of Missing People with full details for consideration of any possible matches with cases known to the charity.
• Consider the services of the Identification team to produce forensic artwork eg image enhancement to sanitise post mortem photographs, or facial reconstruction for skeletal remains.
• Consider the services of Missing People to assist in publicity, including poster production, media releases and website appeals.

Unknown Next of Kin?

Next of kin may not easily be found in many cases of deceased individuals. This can create particular difficulties when dealing with their estate. If however, the individual's identity is known Missing People can check to see if that person has been reported missing by relatives, potentially locating next of kin.

If the individual has not been reported missing to Missing People, they can still be registered on our database in case a relative searches for them in the future.

What to do next - Checklist

Inform Missing People of the individual including:

• Full name
• Date of birth
• Date of death
• Last known address
• Full contact details for record holder (e.g. Coroner's Office)
• Any additional information (e.g. if any relatives were thought to exist)
