Supporting care experienced children on their return from missing

20 March 2024 13:00-16:30

About this event

This online, half-day session will give you, as care providers, the confidence to support care-experienced children when they return from missing. The training is grounded in lived experience and voices of people who are care experienced and have been missing.  We thank The Care Experienced Movement for sharing their expertise with us to shape the content of this training.

Context

Going missing can be a warning sign of a range of serious harm, including sexual and criminal exploitation, bullying, mental health issues and unhappiness in the home.

Children who are looked after in the care system are disproportionately likely to go missing. One in every ten looked-after children will go missing, compared to an estimated one in every two hundred children generally. They are also much more likely to be reported missing on multiple occasions.

A combination of increased risk and over-reporting has left the response to missing children in care settings inconsistent.

Agenda

  • Understanding the national picture of children who go missing from care
  • Why children in care go missing
  • Finding the balance in reporting missing episodes
  • Building rapport and engaging children and young people who are care-experienced
  • Top tips for a good return conversation
  • Report writing and use of appropriate language
  • Safety planning to prevent repeat missing episodes

We will also discuss the Ofsted standards for supported accommodation and the children who go missing from care framework.

Speakers

Holly Pitt – Head of Business Development

Holly has co-created the content for the new children missing from care training and is passionate about ensuring the work we do is centred around the needs of children and young people who go missing. Holly recently led a project in Wales creating a toolkit of resources and training for professionals, focussed on the decriminalisation of children in care. Over the last 5 years at Missing People, Holly has trained hundreds of multi-agency professionals, including police, social workers and care providers, to help them continually improve their communication with missing children.

Beth Hinds – Business Development Coordinator

Beth has worked with the team to create this brand-new training content.  Last year, Beth graduated from university with a first-class honour’s degree in Criminology and Sociology. During her studies, Beth conducted her final-year research on investigating missing people from the perspective of the police. Through this research, Beth developed an interest in comprehending the complexities surrounding the responses to missing persons, including children and young people.
