Key achievements 2006-07
- In 2006/07, we recorded nearly 22,000 enquiries about missing people (more than double that of the previous year) and we opened more than 1,600 actively managed missing people family support cases.
- We helped more than 6,200 vulnerable people calling our Runaway Helpline and Message Home services, an increase of nearly 40% on 2005/06.
- We signed a National Protocol Agreement with all 43 UK police forces in England and Wales.
- We secured funding from Vodafone UK Foundation to enhance the channels of communication for Runaway Helpline service.
- Missing People formed a Policy and Research team to explore the issue and affect of ‘missing’.
Missing People
- In the past year we directly found an average of eight missing people every week.
- There are around 210,000 reports of missing people every year in the UK.
- Two thirds of missing person reports will be young people aged 18 and under (around 140,000 annually).
- On the final day of the 2006/07 year, we had 5,700 active cases of missing people.
- In 2006/2007 1,500 cases of missing people were resolved.
- In 2006/07, we recorded nearly 22,000 enquiries about missing people.
- We opened more than 1,600 actively managed missing people family support cases in 2006/2007.
Runaway Helpline & Message Home
- We helped more than 6,200 people calling our Runaway Helpline and Message Home services in 2006/2007.
Identification
- Missing People’s Identification department registered 76 new unidentified persons cases in 2006/07 and continued to work on more than 150 existing cases.
- There were 1,168 requests to trace unknown next of kin for people who have died or who are in hospital.
Missing From Care
- Our specialist Missing from Care team actively worked on 500 cases in 2006/07. These were of young people who are known to Social Care Services.
- Young people living in residential care are around three times more likely to run away than young people living in families.
Case Publicity
- Of the 53 appeals featured in the Metro around 65% were resolved.
- Missing People issued more than 1200 missing and unidentified appeals through our media partners.
Volunteers
- Our current volunteers donate over 50,000 working hours a year.
