Volunteer

Donating your time can be just as important as donating money and could make a huge difference to Missing People's work.

Why volunteer with Missing People?

Volunteering with us is a truly rewarding experience. We are a unique charity where you have the chance to increase your knowledge of the 'missing' issue and learn useful new skills. You could meet lots of people who, like you, have a passion for our work. You  would also have the chance to gain great experience to add to your CV and develop new skills that will stay with you forever.

Here is what our current volunteers say…

volunteer on helpline“When I put my head on the pillow at night, I know that through our efforts, through what I contributed today, someone’s child sleeps more safely and peacefully tonight. My life and theirs are enriched by the experience of being a volunteer at Missing People.”

“I was instantly drawn to the charity as I had personal experiences with being away from home during my teens. I have been volunteering with the helplines for three years. I thoroughly enjoy my shifts and look forward to coming in every week to volunteer. If the service was running when I was a young runaway I would definitely have used it and found the information and support very helpful.”

Volunteering information
  • We provide out-of-pocket travel expenses of up to £5 a day
  • We have a strong commitment to providing a high level of support for our volunteers, ongoing training and talks to ensure knowledge and skills are kept to the highest standards
  • We insist on equal opportunities and fair treatment for all people applying to be volunteers. The charity's established policy is to ensure that no unlawful discrimination occurs, either directly or indirectly, against any person on the grounds of colour, gender, marital status, race, sexuality, religion, nationality or ethnic or national origin.
  • All volunteers are required to have reference checks and to complete a Criminal Records Bureau Disclosure Form. Missing People arranges  this with your consent. Having a criminal record does not necessarily mean you are unable to volunteer for us – it will depend on the nature of the volunteer role sought, and the circumstances and background of the offences. Any disclosure of information is held confidentially.
  • We do not currently offer any work experience placements at Missing People.

“I have been a volunteer at Missing People for 6½ years, where I spend a few hours every week helping to trace people who have lost contact with their relatives. The background details behind the cases ensure that the work is never boring or predictable as every case is different.”

“My experience of volunteering at Missing People has been a really positive one. The initial training I received was excellent. We have a network of support from the Supervisor on shift right through to the management team. The work is rewarding and fulfilling. I really enjoy the voluntary work I do at Missing People and feel that I get as much from the role as I give.”
